Pedro Lopez serial killer

There are so many serial killers in the world, and one of the notorious serial killers is Pedro Lopez, who is known as the “Monster of the Andes”. He is recognized as a Colombian serial killer and is believed to have murdered more than 300 people, all young girls aged between 9 to 12 years old. He is known to be the second-worst serial killer in the world who walked free from prison. His terror was between 1969 to 1980, which panic in the whole city. Who is really Pedro Lopez? And what is the reason behind his murders? 

Who is Pedro Lopez? 

He is fully known as Pedro Alonso Lopez, who targetted young girls in his home country Peru, and Ecuador. He was charged with 110 murders in 1980. He seek out young girls who had limited economic backgrounds and he use to lure the victims to remote areas, and then raped and murder them. 

Before being deported to Colombia he only served for 14 years and then he was set free. The exact number of murders was not disclosed but it is believed that Lopez confessed to 240 murders.

Lopez was born in Santa Isabel, Colombia. His father was a member of the country’s right-wing party and he was killed in La Violencia.  At the time of his father’s death, his mother was 3 months pregnant.  Pedro was the seventh child among 13 siblings, and he was considered a polite boy.  His mother wanted him to become a teacher. 

But he was kicked out of his house by his mother when she ought him fondling his younger sister.  He then traveled to Bogota,  the capital city of Columbia, and became one of the homeless children.  He joined a gang and smoked basuco,  a form of cocaine.  Then a stranger approached Lopez and took him to an empty building and assaulted him sexually. 

At the age of 10, an elderly American couple found him on the streets and offered him a home, and joined him in a school. But in school, he was molested by a teacher at the age of 12 and so he ran away from the place. He had a life on the streets so he was engaged in stealing, violence, and drugs.  He was arrested at the age of  21 for stealing a car.  In the prison,  he was raped by two men and so he killed his attackers with a knife.  It was then he came out released from prison and seek out young girls.

During the late 70s,  he made his way to Ecuador, and that was the time girls began to go missing.  Families tried to find their girls.

In 1979,  in the city of Ambato, Ecuador, four young girls’ bodies were found.  This made the city panic and alert.   In 1980 he was caught attempting to kidnap a 9-year girl from a busy market. 

During the investigations, Lopez confessed to his murders and said the details about the sites where the victims were buried.  Police found 57 bodies, and Lopez was charged with 110 murders.  He was believed to be responsible for around 200 more deaths. 

On July 31, 1981, he pleads guilty and was imprisoned in Ambato, and he was officially diagnosed as a sociopath.  He received a maximum sentence of 16 years. 

He was set free

On August 31, 1994, he was released and set free after serving for 14 years,  which is two years early due to his good behavior.  He was deported to Colombia,  and there two authorities tried to sentence him for two-decades-old murder.

But he was declared to be insane and was put on in a psychiatric facility. In February 1998,  he was released under $50 bail and visited his elderly mother who was suffering from poverty selling her soul bed and chair to people on the street. 

But then he heard about the possible connection when an Interpol issued a warrant he had to a 2002 murder,  he vanished and was never to be found. And so he is still recognized as the worst serial killer in the world.
