Sexual assault is common for both genders, but most of them are women sexual assault. Studies show that nearly 1 in 5 women has experienced attempted or complete rape during their lifetime. 1 in 3 female rape victims have experienced it for the first time between the ages of 11 to 17, and 1 in 8 female rape victims reported that it occurred before the age of 10. What is sexual assault?

A sexual assault happens when involved in any unwanted sexual contact. Simply any act that is done related to sex, without your clear consent is known as sexual assault. This includes harassment, touching, sexual coercion, rape, or attempted rape.

It can be verbal, visual, or anything that pushes a person to join in unwanted sexual contact. This can happen in different situations, such as on a date, at home by a person you know, by a person who has more power over you at the workplace, or by a stranger in an isolated place. But no matter what, it is never your fault, and you can get support and heal by finding a way to describe it.

Types of women’s sexual assault

Sexual assault can include rape, unwanted sexual touching, forcibly sodomy, marital rape, sexual contact with minors, unwanted or coerced sexual contact, incest, and various similar other acts.

There are many different types of sexual assault, and they are,

Women sexual assault – Acquaintance rape

This is the most common type of assault and it is when someone you know or trust forces you to have sexual intercourse. The rapist can be a friend, family member, neighbor, teacher, boyfriend, girlfriend, or co-worker. Over 80% of rapes are acquaintance rapes and more than 50% of them happen during dates.

Marital rape

Types of women sexual assault

Sexual acts committed without a person’s consent or against a person’s will by the spousal is marital rape. The attacker can be the woman’s husband or ex-husband and they are considered underreported for a number of reasons. The woman may fear the reaction of the husband or the stigmatization and shame or the potential loss of her children.

Drug facilitated sexual assault

This is when someone secretly drops a drug in your drink, and this drug dissolves to be odorless and may be tasteless. When you consume the drink, the drug may affect making you feel drowsy, dizzy, and confused, and you will experience a lack of coordination, slurred speech, and reduced level of consciousness. You won’t even be able to resist, the escape, or call out for help. These drugs may even cause amnesia so that you won’t remember what happened and who assaulted you. This type of thing often happens at the party, clubs, or other social events.

Women sexual assault- It is preventable

Sexual violence will impact health in many ways and it can lead to short-term and long-term physical and mental health problems. So it is a need to focus on preventing them before it happens. To help reduce it, you can change social norms, empower girls and women, teach skills and create a protective environment.

Family members and other caring adults can help the youth to build positive communication skills, like how to handle emotions in a healthy way, and conflict resolutions. Practice and model healthy, safe dating and intimate relationships to them. Promote healthy sexuality by discussing sexual behavior, sexual communication, and consent.

It is preventable

Workplaces and schools can protect environments, by improving safety spaces and staff support for students. They can establish proactive workplace sexual harassment prevention policies and procedures like regular assessments, zero-tolerance, notifying applicants and new hires about harassment-free environments, and specific training to reduce workplace sexual violence behaviors

Promote social norms like speaking up against sexist language or behaviors that promote violence and offer to help or support in situations where violence may occur. Moreover, support survivors to lessen harm.

Your consent is important

Your consent is important

Consent is mutual, honest, enthusiastic, and a verbal agreement. Your consent to any sexual activity is important to reduce and prevent any sexual assault or coercion. It is a process that must be asked for every step of the way. Consent is important to reduce and prevent sexual assault. It is never implied or assumed even in a relationship, where just because you date a person, it doesn’t mean that you have natural permission to have sex. The absence of a “no” doesn’t mean “yes”, so both people should be involved in taking the decision to have sex.

To make sex and relationships work, there should be better communication, respect, and honesty. Asking for consent shows respect for both yourself and your partner. Neither your body nor sexuality belongs to anyone else, but you. And so it is normal and healthy for women to expect to be included in the process of consent.

Consent is understanding what a person feels. Respect your partner’s response and make them feel comfortable.
