Everyone would have experienced headache pain. And we know what it feels like. Some are mild and can be a nuisance to us. You can get rid of it with a small rest, food, or coffee. But there are headaches that will be severe and unusual. There are different types of headaches and meanings for them. They can be more complicated than most of us think. They will have their own symptoms, unique reasons, and different treatments. It is better to know what type of headache you have with meanings and causes to identify the relevant treatments.

Headache is one of the most common pain conditions and according to recent studies, it suggests that up to 1 adult in 20 has a headache every or nearly every day. 

It may feel like a  pain inside your brain but the fact is that it begins with the nerves of the muscles and the blood vessels that surround your neck, face, and head.  It can be due to stress,  enlarged blood vessels,  muscle tension, and various other reasons. These triggers will make the nerves send message to the brain and gives pain in your head. 

Types of headaches and meanings of them.

Headaches are likely to be caused in families, especially migraines. Children who experience migraines mostly will have at least one parent who also experiences migraine. 

Headaches can be triggered by environmental factors that are shared in the Family household.  When you are exposed to strong smells in your houses such as perfumes and chemicals,  you are likely to experience headaches. When you eat foods like caffeine, chocolate, cheese, alcohol, or other fermented foods, or get exposed to allergens or secondhand smoke will cause headaches.

Other than that a few common causes of headaches are alcohol use, depression, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, light, noise, changes in weather emotional stress, or excessive medication use. 

There are about 150 headaches but among them, there are a few headaches that are really common. 

Tension headaches 

Tension headaches are a feeling of pressure, tightness, and dull pain around your forehead or on the back of your head and neck. They are also called stress headaches and it is most common to occur in adults. It can either be an episodic tension headache or chronic tension headache where episodic headache starts slowly and chronic headache come and go for a longer period of time. These headaches can last from 30 minutes to a few days. 


When you get a tension headache you will feel a mild to moderate pain or pressure in the top, front, or on the sides of your head. You feel tired and will have trouble sleeping and focusing. People get this headache because of tight muscles in the back of the neck and scalp. They are triggered by stress from work, friends, school, or relationships. It can also be because of not enough rest, skipping meals, alcohol, hunger, anxiety, and various others. 

How to cure? 

Drink more water and consider how much sleep you get. Because dehydration and lack of sleep can cause headaches. Moreover, do not skip meals. If these didn’t work then you can try pain medications occasionally to get rid of them.

Migraine headaches

Migraine feels like a severe, dull, and steady ache. It will be mild at the start but if you do not give proper treatment it can become moderate to severe. The pain will be felt mostly on the forehead area and usually occurs on one side of the head and can shift to both sides.

It will last for about 4 hours. If you do not treat it, it will last for 72 hours to a week. Along with the pain, you will have other symptoms like sensitivity to noise, light, or smell. Nausea and vomiting, upset stomach or belly pain, and loss of appetite are other symptoms. The exact cause of migraines is not known but they are believed to be the result of abnormal brain activity that affects the nerve signals, blood vessels, and chemicals temporarily. It can be your genes that can make you more likely to experience migraines. 

How to cure? 

It can’t be cured but your doctor can help you to manage the migraine by providing you with tools to treat symptoms making the pain less severe. 

Cluster headaches 

Cluster is one of the types of headaches and meanings of cluster headaches are tending to happen in groups. It can be short but very painful. People mistake this headache to be a symptom of allergies or stress at work because they occur at the same time each year. 

You might feel an intense burning or piercing pain behind or around one eye. It can be so bad that making people sit still or will often pace during an attack. The side of the pain will make the eye redden, pupil smaller, eyelid droops, and causes tears. 

It can occur one to three times per day and may last 2 weeks to 3 months. This headache will wake you up from your sleep and may disappear completely for months or years and then come back later. 

How to cure? 


There is no cure for cluster headaches, but there are some drugs and therapies that can reduce the severity of the pain. Some symptoms will get relieved and treatments will shorten the periods of headaches and the frequency. 

Sinus headaches

You will feel a deep and constant pain in your forehead, cheekbones, and the bridge of your nose. When the cavities in your head called the sinuses to get inflamed they will cause sinus headaches. It causes symptoms like runny nose, fullness in ears, swollen face, and fever. A true sinus headache results from a sinus infection, so a messy substance that comes out of your nose will be yellow, or green. 

How to cure? 

The goal is to relieve symptoms and treat the infection. It can be done through antibiotics for a short time. You can take pain relievers, or the doctor may prescribe corticosteroids to ease the inflammation in your sinuses. 

Drink more fluids, and use a humidifier or a saltwater nasal spray to lessen the symptoms.
