We dream of things that go through our minds just before we fall asleep. Maybe when you are preparing for an exam, you see dreams on the course, if you are in a conflict with someone, you dream of them, if you are working as a developer you might see codes of programming. So let’s see how it is actually happening.

How do dreams work?

Your brain is still active when you sleep, but the dreams we get to have less or no logic and sense, instead of the logical parts in the brain, the emotional center of the brain triggers the dreams. These occur as thoughts based on the recent happenings, incidents, issues, and conversations in life. Although there is no exact proof of dreams there are some theories and beliefs you find.

It occurs during the rapid eye movement (REM) that we go through a period during the night. According to the studies, it is said that the brain waves stay active during the cycle of REM, as it is when we are awake, while they believe that the REM sleep is generated by the brainstem and the dream is generated by the forebrain. When the forebrain is injured we don’t dream but we go into REM sleep, and when the brainstem is injured, we dream but we won’t go into REM dreams. During REM sleep, the pupil constricts, the temperature can’t regulate, and lose muscle tone to protect you from you.

Dreams can be emotional drams of life, as it operates in emotional level when you are not awake, and so it makes connections regarding those feelings. Dreams might prepare you to get ready to face a threat in life, caused by the most active part of the brain during dreaming that associates with a fight or flight response. And dreams are believed to facilitate the tendency of creating and recalling the information you learned.

Why some dreams can be remembered and some cannot?

There are some factors that make you dream.

You are more likely to remember a dream when you wake up during REM sleep. But when you don’t, then you won’t be able to recall them.

Health is the biggest influencer for your dreams as it links with how much or less you sleep. When you suffer from a lack of sleep for one or two nights, your brain parts become active when you go into REM sleep. The restless nights make you get strong and clear dreams that make you recall them.

Depression, stress, anxiety, and conditions that relate to mood, trigger intense and negative dreams and nightmares. Even medications you take to these moods can make you have these intense dreams.

Foods play a role in remembering your dream. Some foods that give you quick energy can leave you feeling down and so it can affect you to the waking mood will affect the unconscious mind. Some food makes you wake throughout the night and it might result in waking up more frequently in the REM stage and so you’ll remember your dreams.

People who are engaged in exercises like running, cardio workouts, and other physical activities fall asleep faster and go into a deep sleep and so nightmares and interrupting dreams will be cut off. And you will be less likely to have intense dreams to recall.
