Today, People are conscious of choosing what’s best for their health. And so they give more attention when choosing their food. As a result, Hard Kombucha is becoming more popular in the market and people find it as a healthier option. But is Kombucha really the best alternative to alcohol? What makes hard Kombucha an alcoholic beverage? 

Kombucha is actually a tea. But what makes it unique is the fermentation (converts sugar into alcohol with the help of yeast). It is a delicious drink that contains a small amount of alcohol less than 0.5% volume so it is considered to be a non-alcoholic beverage. But when kombucha drink is fermented for extra two weeks using more sugar and yeast, it becomes hard kombucha and is considered to be an alcoholic beverage. Hard kombucha contains 4 to 7%  alcohol volume similar to beer. 

The main thing that distinguishes Kombucha and hard Kombucha is the time it takes to prepare. Different manufacturers add different ingredients but the most common ingredients that are used to make hard Kombucha are tea, sugar types like cane sugar or honey, water, yeast, alcohol, and flavorings. It may contain a small amount of caffeine from tea. 

History of Kombucha

2000 years ago, Kombucha was originated in China during the Qin dynasty around 200 BCE. At that time, both tea and fermentation were popular in China. Around 414 AD, a Korean doctor named Dr. Kombu visited Japan and he brought the beverage to the Japanese Emperor Inyoko. The emperor got really impressed with the drink and named it after the doctor himself. In Japan the term ‘Cha’ means tea and so the drink was named by adding the term cha to the doctor’s name and was called ‘Kombucha’. 

Bacteria and yeast fermentation

In 1913, in a rural area of Germany, a virus broke out. When researchers went to the village to find out a cure they found that the villagers had immunity. The villagers drank homemade Kombucha and this became a remedy preventing the villagers safe. By 1917, the Kombucha drink reached more countries like America. This was used by the native medicine men of Siberia and Manchuria as a cure for the diseases of old age.  

Is Kombucha really the best alternative to alcohol?

Obviously, there is no doubt that consuming too much alcohol is bad for your health. But at the same time, most of them feel it hard to stop consuming them. So why not replace your alcohol with a bottle of Kombucha? It makes you feel good while making a great health drink. The more you have, the more you’ll feel uplifted and strengthened, and at the same time, it helps you to have a healthy mind and body.

Will Hard Kombuchas get you drunk? 

Hard Kombuchas is a healthier choice when compared to other alcoholic drinks. But it will have moderate alcohol by volume around 3.5 to 5.5% similar to a beer. So it is an alcoholic drink that can get you drunk. So moderate consumption is better to avoid you getting drunk, especially if it is a home-brewed hard kombucha that has a high level of alcohol content. But regular kombucha will not get you drunk and it is good for pregnant women, children, and breastfeeding women. 


Is it good and healthy for you? 

As it is a drink made of fermenting tea with a specific culture of bacteria and yeast, it has gut-boosting benefits. The bacteria it contains have a probiotic effect that helps in protecting your body from harmful microorganisms. So kombucha helps in providing you with a good balance of healthy bacteria that helps in improving the immune system, digestion, and mental health. 

But if you find a hard Kombucha which is an alcohol-rich version goes through a long process of fermentation and seems similar to the alcohol levels of beer and wine. But this extra alcohol has the possibility of killing some or all the bacteria and so health benefits will be less. Although there is less clarity on Hard Kombucha supporting gut health, it still remains the better option because Hard kombucha contains vitamins and antioxidants despite the high alcohol level and so it is considered a healthier choice. It is naturally gluten-free while being low in sugar, calories, and carbohydrates compared to beer and the other common cocktails. 

When purchasing make sure to check the label to find its recipes that can vary from brand to brand. You can expect Hard Kombucha to have around 5 to 13g of carbohydrates per serving and the calories will range depending on the manufacturer and the type, but it can predict to contain each 8-ounce serving will have around 100 calories. As it is a low-calorie, low sugar alternative, it is considered to be healthy.

Is it safe to consume?

As it is an alcoholic beverage, it can be risky similar to the consumption of alcohol. Homemade hard kombucha can be over fermented or can be spoiled by pathogens.  So great consideration should be taken in care when brewed at home. Drinking too much can cause issues and moreover if you are a person with a liver or kidney condition, or pregnant or breastfeeding woman, then avoid hard Kombucha. It will not be always pasteurized so it could lead to food poisoning.
