What is Gnocchi?

When you see Gnocchi and pasta,  you won’t find much difference because they will look the same.  But Gnocchi is actually a dumpling made from potatoes.  It was originated in Italy and made with  Italian flavors and spices in different forms.  You can find different styles of this dish in France, South America, and Croatia.  This would simply look like lumps of cooked potatoes and that is why it is called Gnocchi which means lumps in Italy. 


When making Gnocchi, the cooked potatoes are mixed and boiled with flour,  getting a result of an airy, light, and fluffy piece of dumpling looking like shells.  This food is served with a variety of sauces and toppings like cheese, cream, or tomato sauce. 

History of Gnocchi

In Northern Italy, the cold climate was better to grow potatoes than grains. Their airy texture and the full potato flavor make them a unique pasta that has a long history in the cuisine of classic Europeans.  Different regions in Italy have different versions of Gnocchi,  making it a perfect peasant and inexpensive food.

Gnocchi is prepared in several variations, but they can be slightly heavier than the regular white pasta. But it is a delicious item that makes Italian Cuisine popular. 


It has a pretty unique texture that makes this dish more special. When they are cooked in the right way, the texture will be the same as the doughy pasta, which is soft and smooth. The food will melt in your mouth and it is easy to chew. 

Does Gnocchi taste good?

Gnocchi could be in heavy nature, but it is meant to be soft and light. Originally, there is not much flavor, it tastes bland and the flavor is similar to the flavor of plain pasta when cooked but chefs add herbs and other vegetables to make Gnocchi delicious. The difference comes between Gnocchi and Pasta when different seasonings are added. 

If you cook the dish properly, the taste will be buttery and flavorful. the flavor alone is very light because the dish that uses Gnocchi is meant to add flavors with soup, sauce, and other ingredients. 

Why is gnocchi healthier than pasta?

Regular pasta is high in protein and it includes some small amount of nutrients. Gnocchi is low in calories and carbohydrates but as Gnocchi is smaller and denser it will make you end up eating big portions than you eat regular pasta.

How to make 

Season the chicken with salt and pepper on both sides. Take a large skillet and heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook for 4 minutes on each side until golden in color, and then remove it from the skillet. 

Reduce the heat to medium and add 1 tablespoon of oil. Add mushrooms, and shallot and cook for 5 minutes until golden color. Add oregano, garlic, and thyme for 1 minute more for fragrance. Add the broth and scrape up the brown bits on the bottom of the pan and then slowly add in half and half. Bring to simmer and season with salt, pepper, and pinch of red pepper flakes. Stir in Gnocchi and return the chicken to the pan. Let simmer until the chicken is cooked at an internal temperature reaching 165°, for 8 to 10 minutes. Stir it occasionally while cooking. 

Add cheese and stir until it gets melted and then add spinach and stir until wilted. Slice the chicken and return to skillet. Add salt and pepper to taste.

How to make

Preheat the oven to 375º and grease a 9”-x-13” baking dish with butter. Melt butter in a large pot and heat over medium heat. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Wisk in 1 tablespoon of flour at a time and stir it constantly for 1 minute. Whisk in broth and heavy cream and then season with salt and pepper. 

Bring the mixture to simmer and reduce to low heat and whisk in ⅓ cup of each cheese until it gets melted and smooth. Remove from heat. Add Gnocchi to the baking dish and pour cheese and stir it until pasta is coated evenly. Add mozzarella and parmesan toppings and season with a few grinds of pepper. Bake until the cheese is golden in color for 25 to 30 minutes and garnish it with basil.
