Willard Carroll Smith Jr. was born on September 25th, 1968, and raised in Wynnefield, Pennsylvania. He was born in a middle-class suburb of West Philadelphia. He is the oldest son with 3 siblings. He was born to a U.S. Air force Veteran and school board administrator in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was raised baptist.

His father was a steady and positive figure in my life, and his mother worked as a school secretary, and a supervisor. His father was a hero to him but he was also terrified about him. When Will Smith was 9 years old, he watched his father punching Will’s mother in the side of the head and she collapsed and spit blood. His parents got separated in 1981 and divorced in the year 2000. 

As a teen, he attended Overbrook High, a public school in Philadelphia. Because of his charming appearance, his teachers nicknamed him “the Prince”. He was good in mathematics and he earned good enough grades to be accepted at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) engineering program

But he denied taking admissions to the college, due to his interest in music and rap, which he chose to pursue as a career. And he started his career in rapping at the age of 16.

Will Smith had an interest in rap and so he started his rap career with his childhood friend Jeff Townes, who had spinning records at parties. But Smith just began to rap calling himself the Fresh Prince. They both performed for some years in different rap groups and paired up occasionally. The Duo was noticed by Jive Records and Russell Simmons and they gave them the opportunity for their first album, “Rock the House” in 1987, and received his first Grammy in 1988.

He signed a contract with NBC Network and performed a series in 1990 for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, continuing for 6 seasons. He shifted to Hollywood and starred in many blockbusters. Six degrees of separation and Bad Boys grossed over $141 million worldwide.

He starred in the movie the independence day in the year 1996, and it became the second highest-grossing movie in history. In 1997, he starred in the movie Men in black and started his solo music career. His performance in the biopic of Muhammed Ali, in 2001 was one of the best performances and so he was nominated for Academy Award and Golden Globe award for best actor. He came back to Bad Boys II in 2003, and it became the first $100 million-grossing movie for him. 

He attended 3 premieres in 24 hours in 2005 and holds the Guinness book of world records. In 2013 he came back for After Earth but it became a painful flop and failure in his career.  He played in the movie Suicide Squad in 2016, and then signed up for Collateral duty. He played the Genie character in the movie Aladdin, and it grossed over $1  billion making it the highest-grossing film for him.

Will Smith’s parents separated when he was a child but they did not get to divorce until 2000.  His mother found the paperwork when she was moving into a new house and decided to get a proper divorce.  Will Smith’s father had never paid any child support, and owed a significant amount of money. His mother was unwilling to make it for him. So Smith decided to transfer the money on behalf of his father and become the first person in the history of Pennsylvania to pay its own child support.

Will Smith wanted to be fun because of his sad childhood.  He believes that comedy will defuse negativity, so he decided to be funny and do a role as an entertainer in his family so that he could solve a tense situation.  But it didn’t always work, as his father was abusive. 

He faced racism and grew up black in Pennsylvania, and was a star in Hollywood, as he recognized ingrained racism within the industry. 

In 1988 and 1989, he spent his money around freely, underpaying his income tax, so was charged a $2.8 million tax debt by the IRS, and many of his possessions were taken. He struggled financially until a television company called NBC offered him a contract to build a show based on his life.

He married his girlfriend Sheree Zampino in 1992 and had a son Trey Smith. The couple divorced in 1995. In 1997, he married actress Jada Koren Pinkett and have two children, Jaden Smith, and willow smith. 

In the 2022 Oscars, Going off script, Chris Rock’s joke about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett didn’t land well, and so Will walked up to the stage and slapped him. And he apologized for his reaction.
