When asked who is Tom Cruise, we usually hear people say that he is one of the biggest movie stars in the United States and Hollywood’s highest-paid actor in 2012, an award-winning American actor and filmmaker known for movies in the Mission: Impossible film series. Tom Cruise originally known as Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born in Syracuse, New York on July 3rd, 1962. He was born to Thomas Mapother, an electrical engineer, and Mary, an amateur actress, and school teacher. He was raised with his three sisters. To support their father’s career, the family had to move around a great deal. They had a rough life and lived in poverty. When Cruise was 11 years old, his parents divorced and the children moved away with their mother to Louisville, Kentucky.

After the separation, the family struggled and Cruise did what he could to support his mother. He went to paying jobs since he was 8 years old, like paper routes, raking leaves, cutting grass, and selling cards. And after Tom Cruise’s mother remarried they moved to Glen Ridge, New Jersey. While Cruise’s father did not hold any special place in the heart of Tom Cruise and his family. 

Cruise suffered from Dyslexia which made academic success difficult for him. He used to dictate his assignments to his mother and she would write them out for him so that he could copy the words in his hand. He used to go blank, nervous, anxious, and frustrated. His legs would hurt when he used to study. So that he was good at athletics and wanted to pursue a career in professional wrestling. But during high school, he suffered a knee injury sidelined, which made him hard to join wrestling. 

At the age of 14, Tom Cruise enrolled in a Franciscan seminary and had thoughts of becoming a priest. But then he left it after a year.

When Tom Cruise was not able to play sports, he started to look for another field. When the parents of Tom cruise were still married, his father got a job with the Canadian military and the family had to move to Ottawa in 1971. It was there he got his interest in acting. He represented his school at a local drama festival and won as a lead. He appeared in multiple roles and made good impressions. 

Acting turned out to satisfy his need to compete and gain attention, and moreover, he was able to cope with his dyslexia. One of his teachers encouraged him to participate in the musical project Guys and Dolls and there he thought of establishing a professional acting career. 

After high school graduation, Tom Cruise went to New York in 1980. To support his life, he worked as a busy boy, a porter, and a table cleaner. He used that money to learn drama at the prestigious Neighbourhood playhouse. He gradually developed his acting skills and joined various auditions. His performance impressed an Italian Film director Franco Zeffirelli, and so was offered a small role in “Endless Love” in 1981.

By the summer of 1983, he appeared in four movies. In a movie called “Risky Business”, he played the role of a teen. Through this movie, he was loved by the film audiences. The film made a significant $65 million at the box office. 

He continued to perform and he was labeled as one of the “Brat Pack” a group of young actors who are predicted to rule the movie industry in the early 1980s. He earned his first nomination for Golden Globe awards for Best Performance. Tom cruise created a sensation through his role as Lt. Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in Tony Scott’s “Top Gun”. This became a box office and brought him to achieve success and gain popularity.

The 21st century was glorious for Tom Cruise as he gained double success as an actor and producer in Mission: Impossible II in 2000, Vanilla Sky in 2001, and The Last Samurai in 2003. It led him to be nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion picture – drama at the 2004 Golden Globe awards. 

He teamed up with Spielberg in the 2005 summer blockbuster movie “war of the worlds”. It collected more than 190 million dollars.

The personal life of Tom Cruise also creates a sensation. He dated the well-known actress Melissa Gilbert, and then Rebecca De Mornay. He married Mimi Rogers on May 9, 1987. Spending three years of togetherness, the couple decided to end their marriage in February 1990.
