Shania Twain was born on August 28, 1965, in the Canadian city of Windsor, Ontario. Her real name is Eilleen Regina Edwards. When she was 2-years-old, her parents got divorced, and so her mother Sharon got remarried to a man called Jerry Twain, who was a part of the Ojibwa tribe. He adopted Twain and her four siblings and so her real name was changed to Eilleen Twain when she was 4-years-old. 

Her life was hard because her family was very poor. So Twain and her siblings often went to school hungry. She use to get jealous of her classmates bringing appetizing lunches. She feared that her teachers would find out how bad off her family was and she would be taken away. Because of the extreme poverty and financial stressj, twain’s stepfather was violent and physically abusive towards her and her mother.

Young Shania Twain and her siblings have seen their stepfather brutally attacking their mother on many occasions. In one incident she saw him push her mother’s head into the toilet. Twain thought that he would kill her and she was drowned or dead. The way he smashed her head, feared twain that she would never wake up. Her mother was unconscious and her hair was in his hands. When she tried to stop and attack her stepfather, he started hitting her.

Twain was just 10 years old when she wrote her first song and it was titled “Mama won’t you come out to play”. She wrote this song for her mother who was an introvert and use to isolate herself. She use to watch things happen from inside through a window. 

Her mother battled depression and sometimes will not get out of bed. Although there were ups and downs in life, Twain was fully supported by her mother for her ambitious career in music. It was with her support Twain was able to take steps toward it.

Shania was working hard on her music, but then an incident changed her priorities in her life. When Shania was 22-years-old, the Twain family was struck by a tragedy. Shania’s mother and her stepfather were killed in a car accident. 

So she had to return to her hometown to support her young siblings. She raised them single-handedly and covered her family expenses by accepting to be a part of a Las Vegas-style show at a nearby resort in Huntsville, Ontario.

But she didn’t want to give up on her dreams and wanted to achieve them because of her mother. She wrote music when she got the free time. Her demo made it to Nashville and her new label liked her music, but her name has not cared. She wanted to keep her last name Twain to honor her adoptive step-father, so she changed her name to Shania Twain.

Betrayal by her husband

She fell in love with the producer Robert “Mutt” Lange and got married in 1993. He redefined Twain’s sound in her 1995 album, “The Woman in Me” and made her cross over from country to pop charts. 

But in 2008, she announced her separation after 14 years of marriage. Sources told that Lange had an affair with her best friend and personal assistant Marie-Anne. She was in total shock after finding it. And the divorce was finalized in 2010. 

She found her true love

After the devastating breakup, she was able to relate her pain to only one person. And it was Marie-Anne’s husband Frederic Thiebaud who was also betrayed by his wife. Both Shani and Frederic bonded and formed a romance. In 2011, they made their love official and got married. 

She was diagnosed with Lyme disease

Shania began losing her voice, and it led the doctors to diagnose her with a vocal cord disorder and Lyme disease. Devastated, she was mourning the loss of her voice and underwent two open-throat surgeries. It was really a tough experience for her. The surgeries saved her voice but they also changed her voice. It was a great loss to discover her new voice.

Twain took 15 years to break from music to help her recover. But over time she started appreciating her new voice and started to accept it.  Music has always been in her heart and her passion and love for it never faded even in the roughest part of her life. She is proof of hard work and true love.
