At an early age, he was an undiagnosed dyslexic and struggled with studies. Jim Carrey had no friends at school and faced loneliness as a child. He used to spend most of his time staring at the mirror and making faces of himself while never knowing how to socialize. But at the age of 10, he had an interest in becoming a comedian and sent his resume to comedian Carol Burnette in the hope of being discovered.

The poverty Jim faced

Jim Carrey’s parents were heavy smokers. And Jim use to lock himself in the bathroom and cry because he thought they were going to die. His fears increased when his mother talked about her own mortality.

When he was 15 years old, his father lost his job and the family became homeless, while his mother battled depression. The family had not enough money to afford a house and had to live in a van. They moved from Toronto and Carrey and so had to drop out of school. He started working in a steel factory as a janitor.

The dream to achieve

The dream to achieve

Jim discovered his ability to make people laugh and he decided to pursue his dreams of becoming a comedian. His father Percy encouraged Carrey to try it and to find out opportunities.

He did his first public performance at a local comedy club but was not successful. But he didn’t lose hope and strived to do better. He moved to Los Angeles in 1987, to follow his dreams of becoming an actor. During the first few years, he was struggling to make money and almost gave up.

He would drive to the top of Mulholland Drive in LA every night and visualize himself becoming an actor. In 1992, he wrote a check to himself for 10 million dollars and dated it three years in advance, and kept it in his wallet as a reminder.

Jim got attacked by the crowd

The crowd was expecting Carrey’s impressions of celebrities like Clint Eastwood and Jimmy Stewart. But Carrey was not satisfied with that. But once he stopped doing the impressions, the crowd turned on him. They were disappointed to find Carrey trying experimental comedy like hiding inside a piano during another comedian’s time on stage. Some nights the people would be screaming at him to do the old act and get violent and angry at him. At times, it could be so bad that he would have to defend himself with a broken beer bottle. Some people walked out, and Carrey left the show feeling devastated and got into the car while crying all the way home.
