When asked who is Neymar Jr, the answer you get is that he is a professional Brazilian footballer, playing as a forward for the national team and French club Paris Saint-Germain. He is regarded as one of the best players in his generation because of his eye-catching skills and the series of nominations for Ballon d’Or. But only a few football fans know about his journey to reach his successful position. The childhood story of Neymar

Neymar da Silva Santos Junior was born on 5th February 1992 to his father Neymar Santos and mother Nadine Goncalves in Mogi Das Cruzes. He was raised in a low social quality neighborhood that was filled with high crimes, low income, and usage of drugs. He is the first son and the child out of two children.

They had a life of poverty due to a low income and during the pregnancy, the family couldn’t afford an ultrasound scan to check the development of the baby.  His father was a player in the lowest place in the São Paulo football league so he couldn’t make much money for the family. Neymar joined the local School in São Paulo and studied with the street students.  

Due to some injuries in an accident, his father suffered a broken hip bone and so stopped playing football. This resulted in extreme hardship. They couldn’t afford to pay the electricity bill and most of the time the family lived under the candlelight. The family had no option but to move to Neymar’s grandfather’s house and they had to stay in one room sharing a single mattress. 

His football career

Neymar Jr was too hyperactive and cherished football. His father recognized his interest in Football and decided to train him. At the age of 6,  he played Futsal and this influenced him massively while growing up. He developed his skills and performed moves in tight spaces. In 1999, the family moved to São Vicente and there they found a highly competitive team. Neymar passed the trials and got into their ranks.


Fans observed his play and were amazed at his skills and creativity. He used an array of tricks to beat the players who were bigger and older than him. He became the best futsal kid in the entire academy and was cheered for his confidence, tricks, and ability to perform big moves. At the age of 11, he joined the youth side of the Portuguese team Santos FC.

His debut

On March 7th, 2009 he was 17 years old and made it was when Neymar Jr made his debut. In his debut season, he played 48 games and scored 14 goals. So he was awarded as the Best young player. In the 2009 FIFA Under-17 world cup, he represented the Brazil U-17 team and made his first international debut on August 10th, 2010 against England. He turned into a global superstar which many teams dreamt of having him. He helped Brazil to win the prestigious 2011 South American Youth Championship.

Around 2013 May, he transferred to Spanish Giant and this changed the life of Neymar’s family forever. He became a part of Barcelona’s attacking trio Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. They helped the Blaugrana to fetch all the available titles including La Liga, Champions League, Copa Del Rel, UFEA super sup, and FIFA club world cup. 

The glory Neymar Jr reached

In the 2013-2014 La Liga season, he made his debut for FC Barcelona and won the first match of the season 7-0. He became a part of the Brazil squad for the confederations cup in 2013 and scored three consecutive games and became the player of the match. And he was awarded the Golden ball.

The performance of Neymar Jr put him in the elite league of footballers and was shortlisted and finished third in the FIFA Ballon d’Or rankings behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.


In the 2016 Rio Olympics, Neymar was appointed as the captain of the team and scored a goal in a 1-1  drawing between Brazil and Germany. On March 9th, 2017 in football history, Neymar Jr and Barcelona pulled off the biggest comeback ever bouncing back from 4-0 to win the home leg 6-1 against PSG. Neymar became the star man of the show. 

He became the most expensive footballer in history by joining the Paris Saint Germain from Barcelona for$200 million. 

Neymar Jr is recognized as the most marketable athlete in the world and was ranked among the top 100 most influential people on the planet.
