If you are a fan of Pirates of the Caribbean, then you would surely know about Johnny Depp. He achieved great success as Capt. Jack Sparrow in the series. The actor is known for his versatility when it comes to playing roles in movies and television. He is an American actor, producer, director, screenwriter, and musician. He spent most of his time in the public eye, and he rose to fame in 1987 with 21 Jump street.

The early life of Johnny Depp

John Christopher Depp III was born on June 9th, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky. His father was a city engineer and his mother Betty Sue Palmer was a waitress and homemaker. He is the youngest of four children. Depp and his family moved frequently because of his father’s job and when he was 7 years, they shifted to Miramar, Florida.

They lived in a motel until his father found a job. Depp did not like his new home and by the age of 12, due to family problems and stress, he started smoking and experimenting with drugs, and self-harm. 

When he was 15 years old, his parents divorced. Depp use to go to his father’s office and pick up the weekly child-support money and the split caused a gap between him and his father. He dropped out of high school when he was 16 years old and joined a garage band called the Kids. the group became successful to open for the talking heads and the B-52s but made barely ends meet.

He dreamt of becoming a famous rock band. The ‘Kids’ band moved to Los Angeles and there Johnny Depp took a sighted job of selling ballpoint pens over the phone to support himself. But at a point, he and his fellow rockers decided to separate ways and look after their personal life and career.

On December 20th, 1983, he got married to a makeup artist Lori Allison. Even though the marriage didn’t last long, he gained something precious through her. She introduced him to Nicholas Cage, and so he saw the potential in Depp and so made him get a cast for his feature film debut in the 1984 slasher flick “A Nightmare on Elm Street”.

In 1987, he replaced the actor Jeff Yagher in the role of an undercover cop Tommy Hanson in a popular Canadian-film television series 21 Jump Street. This role gave him immediate stardom and became a teen idol overnight. He was given a chance to reveal his versatility in the title role of the movie “Edward Scissorhands” in 1990. 

This latest film also became a hit and taught Depp to not repeat himself in subsequent characterizations. The movie grossed more than $54 million at the box office and so he carved himself as a serious, dark, and idiosyncratic performer and selected roles that surprised the critics and audiences. He was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for best actor in comedy or musical.

Between 1991 and 1993,  he played several roles.  In 1994, he played the role of film director Ed Wood.  The critics praised the performance of Johnny Depp, although it received a low income. In 1997, he directed, produced, and starred in the movie “The Brave”. In 1999,  he played in the feature film ” Sleepy Hollow”.

He starred in the movie ” Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” released in 2003.  He played the role of pirate Jack Sparrow and he became one of the most popular characters. the film was at the box office.  He won an award from the Actors Guild for the best actor and got nominated for the Oscar award in the same category. He later performed in “Finding Neverland” and the film earned him more than 10 award nominations.

He took one of the most notorious characters in “Sweeney Todd” in 2007 and received a golden globe award for the film. In 2010, he returned to box office success with the film adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland, and this brought more than $116 million in its opening weekend. 

He took a role in “Whitey Bulger in 2015, and in 2016 Johnny Depp reprised his role as Mad Hatter in “Through the Looking Glass”. The following year, he returned as Jack Sparrow for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men tell no tales” and joined the ensemble cast for an adaptation of Murder on Orient Express.

In August 1993, he and his business partners bought The Viper Club in L.A. Depp used the club as an opportunity to introduce patrons to music. But on October 31st, a tragedy hit when teen heartthrob River Phoenix suffered a drug overdose and died later that evening. Depp was also immersed in drugs and went into a deep depression

He started a relationship with supermodel Kate Moss. And in 1994, they had a fight, and Depp trashed a New York hotel room. in 1998, he split from his long-time girlfriend Moss. He later met a French actress, singer, and model Vanessa Paradis while filming The Ninth Gate in 1999. In May 1999, they welcomed their daughter, and three years later, they had their second child. Depp and Paradis had been together for nearly 14 years when they split

In 2009, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard met on the set of the film ‘The Rum Diary”. In 2015, they married and in 2016, Amber heard filed for divorce and obtained a temporary restraining order against Depp, claiming he abused her while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. So due to his personal problems, and court cases, he was removed from the Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic beast. His career is now a question mark similar to Will smith.
