Barely a year after Jolie’s birth, her parents separated in 1976. Her mother filed for divorce in 1978, and this was finalized in 1980.

After the divorce, her father did not stay in touch with the family and when her mother decided to relocate to New York everything changed. The family had to move often back then and they never owned a home but moved from small apartments to even smaller ones. They were always conscious of money and they had to rely on their father for financial support.

She had a difficult relationship with her father, Jon Voight, but she was extremely close and protective of her brother.

She attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute at the age of 11 and then at the age of 14 years, she started modeling. At age 16, after she graduated from Beverly Hills High School, she majored in film at New York University. Her modeling and appearance in some music videos did not take off.

Bullying

She had difficult periods in her childhood as she was being picked on by other children for being very thin and wearing glasses. As she was different, she wasn’t acceptable and was often mocked by her peers for being so. But still, Angelina Jolie did not give in to the pressure and stayed true to herself, doing stuff she liked such as wearing black clothes and experimenting with hair colors.

Jolie also decided to try modeling a shot to make some money like her classmates, but sadly she didn’t receive great feedback from agents. They criticized her and said things like she was too short, too fat, and so on. Jolie later admitted that she went through a tough period as a teenager.
