The problems with nails

Hands and nails are practically used for everything, from picking things up off the ground, scratching, holding hands with others, and many more. These activities collect dirt underneath the free edge of our nails growing outwards.

The fingernails consist of a protein called keratin and debris and skin cells get collected and turn into a grayish color when coming in contact with dirt and oil. It is also common for the remains of personal care products such as lotions, makeup, and soaps to get collected under the nails.

Under your nails, if you find a lot of build-ups and don’t normally make it to a manicurist, you can check out a few tips to get your nails clean and healthy.

How to get clean nails?

Wash your nails

wash your nails

Use an antibacterial soap that contains natural ingredients like tea tree oil, citrus, and other natural Essence, so that it can leave our hands and nails looking and feeling Super fresh.  Start the heat up on the water.  It is best if the water is hot because germs and dirt don’t like the heat. Make sure that the heat is appropriate for the hands to touch and that it doesn’t burn.

And let the warm water run over your hands for a few seconds then spend at least 20 seconds aggressively scrubbing those hands together.  Rub around the cuticles and get in between the fingers while doing some preliminary scrapping to get a bigger piece of dirt out under the nails.

Do not let the hand soak for too long because the combination of heat and pressure can cause the nail to break down so make sure that you keep your hand at the sink for a total of 30 seconds.

After cleaning them with soap and water make sure to dry those nails because bacteria love moisture so you need to dry every square inch to dry as possible immediately after scrubbing. You can dry it by using cotton balls, tissues, or a fan.  The longer you wait to dry those nails the greater chance you will run into problems with other germs.

Use a nail brush

The most important thing to have is a good nail brush for the removal of dirt. To scrape the dirt out, no other object works better than any object. Buy an affordable, sturdy, and pretty dang elegant as far as nail brushes are concerned.

Nail brushes are small, and handheld brushes that look like a toothbrush for the fingernails.

These brushes come in different shapes and sizes and also have varying degrees of stiffness based on your preferences. Some people use them to get those hard-to-reach areas under the nails while they’re washing their hands.

While washing your hands will get your nails clean, there will be some particles that cannot be seen from a human height and can still remain under your fingernails. To reduce the germs and to clean the nails thoroughly, use a soft-bristled nail brush to clean the nails.

Hold it under warm water for the bristles to become wet and squirt the antibacterial soap onto the nail brush.  Hold it in your hand and place the bristles under each fingernail.  Move it from side to side and cover all of the nails.

After using the nail brush on all of the nails on one hand, clean it by rinsing the brush under warm water. Repeat the same steps on the other hand. Towel dry your hands.

Do not scrub too hard.

Remove if there is nail polish

nail polish and nail remover

If necessary, remove nail polish by using a strengthening nail polish remover and cotton balls or wipes, and wet them with the polish remover.

Scrub your nails firmly to remove the nail polish left on your nails.  Start from the cuticle of the nail and work towards the fingertip. Also, do it on the sides. The remover should dry thoroughly by itself, but you can keep a tissue or dry cotton ball nearby to help scrub after applying the wet cotton ball, as well.

Find the appropriate nail care tools

Use the tools once your hands get completely dried. This includes Orangewood sticks, cotton swabs,  cuticle pushers, and mini sponges for clean nails.  These items can be brought individually but sometimes they come bundled together in a pack and buying them would help to save time and money.

A cuticle Pusher is a thin steel rod with a spoon-like scalpel shape on the end.  So you need to be very careful when using the stool because the amount of pressure you apply to the underside of the nail can be damaging if it is too hard.  Focus on your nails and see how they are responding to the instrument and if you see any separation of dirt you can use it.

He takes time to master the cuticle Pusher technique but it can be the best tool to remove the majority of the build-up of dirt under nails.

Orangewood sticks are slightly less abrasive than steel tools and stiff brushes so you can toss them in the trash without reusing them. It is a soft, contoured wooden stick that is designed to fit under the nail to loosen anything lodged in there. But don’t get too aggressive when handling.

To rub alcohol or hydrogen peroxide on hand, use cotton swabs and it can be intense by completely removing the bacteria.

Cut and trim

cleaning the nails with nail brush

This is the most effective way to get clean nails. Even though you scrub your nails and hands, it is important to maintain the shape and structure of the nail so it helps to prevent bacteria buildup and other related issues.

When it comes to nail hygiene,  you need to learn how to properly cut them and care for the cuticles.  You might think that trimming your nails can be done by yourself but there are chances that you are doing it wrong. You need to cut across the top of the nail and avoid rounding them too much as it can lead to hanging nails and make them harder to clean.

Pick some precise trimmers that will allow you to shave with more accuracy without choosing a heavy-duty set of scissors and clippers.  If you trim the nails in the right way it will help to keep the dirt free from hands.

Moisturize the nails

Every week make it a habit to moisturize your nails. If you moisturize, it would keep the nails flexible and free of cracks. Use aloe, natural oils, or cocoa butter lotion to moisturize the nails regularly.

Than most oils, Castor oil has a thicker consistency and making it the perfect deep conditioning treatment. It strengthens and protects nails, moisturizes cuticles, and adds some more oomph back to your nails. It also has antifungal properties to fight those nasty infections.

Although this natural treatment won’t necessarily change the look of your nails but will help to keep them soft and pliable.

Treat yellow nails

If your nails are yellow, you can use lemon juice or tree tea oil to treat them.

Tea tree oil is a natural fungicide with antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. Lemon juice has citric acid which helps to whiten nails back to their original luster. You can even use lemon essential oil.

Drop a small amount of tea tree oil onto each of your nails and let sit for 5 minutes. Then rinse it. Apply lemon juice in the same way, rinse, and clean your hands normally.

Not cleaning your tools

There is no use in cleaning your nails using tools when you do not clean those tools. After every use, make sure to sanitize them properly, especially after using them on your toenails. wash them with soap and water and dry them thoroughly. Disinfect them with some rubbing alcohol.

Use nail polish to clean nails

Sometimes you find it easy to clean your nails using nail polish remover. Many nail polish removers contain lanolins and moisturizers to prevent them from being too harsh on our hands which creates a barrier between your nails and the polish.

Filling nails wrong

When you’re filling your nails, if you curl your fingers towards you then it is wrong. none of our fingers are perfectly aligned and you might follow the shape of fingers when turning your hand away back, you will notice the nails going in a different direction.

Hold your hand away from you with your fingers pointing upwards and use the horizon as a guide to filing your nails for a consistent shape.

Too rough on cuticles

Your cuticle seals and protects the matrix area where the nail grows. You don’t want to shove that back and get underneath there as it can cause separation of the cuticle and possibly an infection. Being rough will make the cuticle thicker.

Use an orange wood stick gently to push and even out the shape of the cuticle so you have an even shape from one side to the other.
